Is is just me, or did it feel like an oven out there this morning? I have obviously forgotten what it's like to train in the summer, because it was only about 70 when I ran but it felt like 90.

"Easy" run down to Highland High over to Stratford and back on 20th East. HR was 7-10 BPM higher than normal (my HR is always higher than everyone else's I know) for this pace and distance. Haven't slept well for the past 5 nights due to some back pain. Maybe that contributed to the problem. Some days you feel like a gazelle, others you feel like a manatee on land. Today was a manatee day.

Congrats to everyone from FRB who ran Ogden last Saturday. After being out of the loop for a year, I was amazed to see the dominance of the group.

Tried to work in a little tempo in the middle of an easy 6, with the plan being to do mile 3 around 6:00-6:10. I have apparently forgotten what 6-min pace feels like, because I hit 5:25 pace (didn't look at the Garmin to adjust my pace) for 1/2 mile with AHR of 188 and MHR of 194 over that section, meaning that I was in VO2 Max mode. With my current level of fitness (or lack thereof), I couldn't keep up the pace much longer, so I decided to call it good on my tempo work for the day and finish at an easy pace. I'll shoot for a full mile next week and will try to stay just under 6:00 to see what HR does there. Should have slowed down the easy miles by 30 sec/mile or so.

Good news is that achilles pain is minimal and only present in the very early going.

Met Heather, Ellen and Cherell at Davis Park and ran up Emigration Canyon. Easy, conversational pace all the way up, then picked it up after Ellen and Cherell turned around at 6 (Heather had turned around earlier--she had already run a few miles before meeting us at 6:30 because she had to be back by 7:45). Really enjoyed the company for the first half of the run--need to make a habit of that on long runs. Decided to work in a little tempo on the downhill section to see what the legs and heart could handle. Here are my splits for the tempo section, together with AHR for each mile:

Mile 8: 6:34/155

Mile 9: 6:26/165

Mile 10: 6:20/169

Mile 11: 6:19/171

Mile 12: 6:09/174

Mile 13: 5:48/180

Mile 14 (cooldown): 6:44/173

Very mild AT pain on much of the climbing section. Also felt it a little on final couple of faster miles. Iced afterward. Overall, it was a rejuvenating long run that got me excited to really start training again.

Pace: 7:29

Run 2: 3.12 miles. Neighborhood Memorial Day 5k. Ran with Jacob to help him avoid the temptation to sprint for the first quarter mile and be miserable for the rest of the run.

Time: 29:20. Jacob followed instructions, only had to walk once for about 100 feet, and beat his buddy Zach in a sprint finish, so it was a complete success.

Are you new? Didn't notice you on the new kids place. Any way welcome to the blog. Looks like you have some good talant. Did you do Ogden marathon, I see that is where Sasha snagged you. Are you running a marathon in the fall?

From Jed on Mon, May 26, 2008 at 23:01:49

I joined the blog in 2006, right after meeting Sasha, so I think that's why I didn't show up as a newbie, even though I hadn't blogged for 2 years.

I've been fighting a couple of injuries for the past year or so, so I'm just starting to train again. I paced a friend for the final 10k of Ogden but didn't do it myself. I ran into Sasha at the finish line and he talked me into blogging again.

I'll be doing St. George and may run Park City if I'm able to get in racing shape by then. Other than that, the only thing on the docket is Wasatch Back, which I run as part of a non-competitive but fun team of friends.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Allergies have been going nuts over the past few days, so I started taking medication yesterday. May have overdone it with both Benadryl (just before midnight) and Claritin, because I felt like I was in a fog on the run. Kept pace slow, but it still felt lousy, and HR was too high for such a slow effort. No matter how many times I go through allergy season, it always seems to catch me off guard how bad I can feel until the medication gets on top of things. Yuck.

Trail run with Black Sheep group. Lisa invited me to come along and it sounded like a good run in preparation for Wasatch Back, so I dragged myself out of bed at 5:30 am. Met at Cucina and, with group of 16, worked our way up to 11th Ave and down to City Creek, where we took off onto a trail that eventually connected up with Shoreline Trail. I stayed with the lead group for 3-4 miles until, on one of the steeper climbs, I looked down at my Garmin and saw that HR was closing in on 190. I backed off at that point and let my heart calm down. Felt fine after that. I was probably suffering a little more than usual due to my failure to run on Wednesday and Thursday. Need to be more consistent in the coming weeks as I try to get some fitness back. Overall, it was a great run with a fun group of fantastic runners.

Run/hike up Big Beacon with Patrick. Really only ran about 2.5 miles, but grade was so steep (gain of 1750 feet over 2 miles) that I was able to keep HR pretty high on the hiking sections, too. Incredible view from the top, especially after climbing the ladder to the top of the tower! Should have gone back the way we came; we took what seemed like a mountain goat trail down, cutting nearly a mile of distance and nearly causing great harm to ourselves. Shoes were barely able to stay intact, but we somehow made it down safely.

Decided to try a simulation of Wasatch Back assignment (legs 10, 22, 34), so I did my first leg at 5:00 pm. The route was harder than leg 10, but it still felt pretty lousy running in the afternoon. I'll try to get out late tonight for around 6, then early tomorrow for "Ragnar."

AHR/MHR: 164/189

Leg 2: Simulation of second leg of Wasatch Back assignment. Hard pace, particularly first 3 miles (6:20, 5:54, 6:05). First 3 felt quick and comfortable (minus the side stitch throughout miles 2 and 3--maybe it was the 5-buck pizza and chocolate creamie I had for dinner). Uphill second half felt harder, but still pretty good. One twinge of AT pain in first mile, but it didn't come back. Had side stitch that lasted a couple of miles. Will try my "Ragnar" leg in the morning to round out the 3-leg simulation. AHR/MHR: 175/187

I was badly depleted after yesterday's workouts. Should have eaten something between last night's leg and this one. Felt absolutely awful for first mile and a half or so, then kind of settled in a bit. Note to self: eat better for Wasatch Back than I have the past two days.

Wasatch Back Relay Leg 23 at 3:20 am. Pushed a good, steady pace from start to finish. Picked up guy from Fazoli's team in Mile 2 only to have him catch right back up. We ran together for about 1.5 miles until he told me he had to drop. Invigorating run in perfect weather (about 50 degrees). Felt good about pace, given that I haven't started doing any speedwork yet.

Quads were destroyed after mile 2--I haven't done any downhill training yet and need to get them back into condition. Started feeling a pebble in heel of left shoe in mile 2. Got progressively more painful until I felt it rupture in mile 6. When I finished, I took my shoe off to find the worst blister I've ever seen. Probably about the size of 2 silver dollars and the calloused skin was torn back and compressed so badly that I couldn't save it. I'm worried about how long it will take to heal.  Felt like I left it all on the course, which was good.

AHR/MHR: forgot to wear HR monitor, but I'm guessing average was around 180 and max was around 188.

You have so much more self-control than I do (I'll never forget watching you munch on carrot sticks during Crim Law--"Was it [drumroll] mur-dah?")! However, as of today, I am also swearing off the treats in the break room. I'm going to have to take it one day at a time, though. It's been about 20 hours since my last hit.

Dropped off car in Holladay and ran home.  Janey has been sick the past couple of nights and hasn't been sleeping well, so neither have I.  I think that may have played into a general feeling of fatigue/malaise on the run.  AT still giving some pain, particularly in the early mile or so of each run.

Easy 9 at Bear Lake. Went north from the cabin to the north shore and back. Nice rolling hills to mix things up. Should have left earlier, as it was getting pretty hot by the time I finished.

Quick 4 before work. Started riding in yesterday and enjoyed it.  I'm experimenting with a few things right now, trying to figure out what mode of transportation will be the best in terms of cost, efficiency, and hassle.

Ran to Murray to pick up Vespa. Easy pace, nice morning for a run. Mild AT pain.

Way to minimize the carbon footprint, Jed. What kind of Vespa do you have? I've been looking ... Should never have sold the '78 Primavera 125 I had in high school.

Thanks, Chad. I've been experimenting with the bus and biking to work (the bike is winning right now), so this is just for getting around outside of work. The Vespa is actually my dad's (he got it as a toy for cruising around the block with the grandkids), so I'm just borrowing it for a few months. It's a Piaggio 150, and it works great. It's nice to have enough power to feel comfortable on the occasional busy road and not to feel like I'm pissing off all the cars on the road for not being in the bike lane.
