Short-Term Running Goals:

Train for as solid a race in Boston 2011 as my schedule will allow.  Accept the fact that there isn't room in my life to train for a breakthrough performance and do the best I can under the circumstances.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Lose the all-or-nothing mentality and start using running as an outlet instead of an additional source of stress.

I'm married with 4 kids (2 boys, 2 girls) and live in Salt Lake City, where I work as a real estate attorney.

Let me have men about me that are fat,
Sleek-headed men and such as sleep a-nights.
Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look,
He thinks too much; such men are dangerous.

Very easy run with Brooke. I pushed Janey in the jogger and Brooke took Maya. Very easy pace.

Run/hike up Big Beacon with Patrick. Really only ran about 2.5 miles, but grade was so steep (gain of 1750 feet over 2 miles) that I was able to keep HR pretty high on the hiking sections, too. Incredible view from the top, especially after climbing the ladder to the top of the tower! Should have gone back the way we came; we took what seemed like a mountain goat trail down, cutting nearly a mile of distance and nearly causing great harm to ourselves. Shoes were barely able to stay intact, but we somehow made it down safely.

Sugarhouse loop in the rain with Maya. Quads are sore from yesterday's descent, but generally felt fine. No more AT pain than usual, which is a good sign given the amount of climbing I've done lately.

Country Club loop. Legs still feeling heavy from Wednesday's Big Beacon run. Also dealing with some mental fatigue from craziness at work. Overall, I just felt spent. Nice morning for a run, though.

Long-ish run with Patrick to 11th Ave and over to Capitol. Returned via Popperton trail. Felt tired start to finish, extremely fatigued after the run, continuing well into the day. Outside stresses seem to be getting to me. Blah.

23rd East loop with Maya (the dog) in tow (especially the last mile--she was loafing!). Comfortable throughout.

Decided to try a simulation of Wasatch Back assignment (legs 10, 22, 34), so I did my first leg at 5:00 pm. The route was harder than leg 10, but it still felt pretty lousy running in the afternoon. I'll try to get out late tonight for around 6, then early tomorrow for "Ragnar."

AHR/MHR: 164/189

Leg 2: Simulation of second leg of Wasatch Back assignment. Hard pace, particularly first 3 miles (6:20, 5:54, 6:05). First 3 felt quick and comfortable (minus the side stitch throughout miles 2 and 3--maybe it was the 5-buck pizza and chocolate creamie I had for dinner). Uphill second half felt harder, but still pretty good. One twinge of AT pain in first mile, but it didn't come back. Had side stitch that lasted a couple of miles. Will try my "Ragnar" leg in the morning to round out the 3-leg simulation. AHR/MHR: 175/187

Simulation of "Ragnar" leg of Wasatch Back. Actually, I was only able to get in 2.2 miles of hard uphill before turning around (Ragnar is a solid 4 miles of climbing). I was badly depleted after yesterday's workouts. Should have eaten something between last night's leg and this one. Felt absolutely awful for first mile and a half or so, then kind of settled in a bit. Note to self: eat better for Wasatch Back than I have the past two days.

Sugarhouse loop with Maya. First 3 miles were reasonably quick, but Maya ran out of gas after that and slowed me down about 30 seconds per mile. Comfortable throughout, with very minimal AT pain.

Easy out-and-back with Maya (the dog) up to Shoreline trail and over to Red Butte and back. Other than steep climbing sections, felt easy and comfortable throughout, with no noticeable AT pain. Maya did much better on the trails than she does on the road--the slower pace seems to suit her better.

Had family obligations from early morning until late evening, so I didn't get my planned long run in. Bummer.

Since June has been a very mild month until today, I decided to run in the heat of the day to try to get the body somewhat acclimated to running in hot weather. Left at 4:45 pm, when the temp was around 92. HR was higher than normal for this pace, and I was much more fatigued when I finished than I normally am. Friday and Saturday should be fun.

Easy morning run. Decided to start cutting mileage back in preparation for WBR. Not that I've been doing enough to really taper, but I want the legs to be as fresh as they can. It still won't be pretty!

Wasatch Back Relay Leg 11 at 7:15 pm. Climbing portion beat me up pretty badly, but I felt good about my overall performance, particularly the downhill section, which I covered in an average pace of 5:02/mile. Some AT pain, but not bad at all considering the terrain.

Wasatch Back Relay Leg 23 at 3:20 am. Pushed a good, steady pace from start to finish. Picked up guy from Fazoli's team in Mile 2 only to have him catch right back up. We ran together for about 1.5 miles until he told me he had to drop. Invigorating run in perfect weather (about 50 degrees). Felt good about pace, given that I haven't started doing any speedwork yet.

AHR/MHR: 173/179

Wasatch Back Relay Leg 35 at 11:23 am. Splits were 6:52 (uphill), 5:14, 5:49, 7:48 (steep uphill section), 5:51, 6:01, 5:41. Quads were destroyed after mile 2--I haven't done any downhill training yet and need to get them back into condition. Started feeling a pebble in heel of left shoe in mile 2. Got progressively more painful until I felt it rupture in mile 6. When I finished, I took my shoe off to find the worst blister I've ever seen. Probably about the size of 2 silver dollars and the calloused skin was torn back and compressed so badly that I couldn't save it. I'm worried about how long it will take to heal.  Felt like I left it all on the course, which was good.

AHR/MHR: forgot to wear HR monitor, but I'm guessing average was around 180 and max was around 188.

First workout since shredding my heel in final leg of WBR. Cycled to Big Mountain and back with Jared, Tom, and George.  As usual, I pulled away on the climbs and had to fight like crazy to stay with them on the flats and downhill sections.

AHR 152.
